The E5 long-distance hiking trail crosses the Tyrolean Lechtal near Holzgau on the stage between Kemptner Hut and Memminger Hut. The part described here leads from Kemptner to Memminger Hut. Kemptner Hut is located on the border to Austria near Oberstorf. From the Kemptner hut the path leads south and crosses the border at the Upper Mädelejoch. The pass lies at just under 2000 m, the difference in altitude to the Kemptner Hut is about 150 m. In the immediate vicinity are numerous worthwhile mountain tours such as the Große Krottenkopf or the Mädelegabel. From the Mädelejoch we continue in the direction of Holzgau through the Höhenbach valley. On the way south you will reach the upper and lower Rossgumpenalm after a while. The lower Rossgumpenalm is open during the summer season. Further ahead in the Höhenbachtal you pass the Café Uta snack station and the famous Simms waterfall. After about 3 to 4 hours you reach Holzgau im Lechtal. In Holzgau you have the possibility to take a taxi for the 14 km long distance from Holzgau to the parking lot Memminger Hut. Currently, a one-way taxi ride from Bach to the Memminger Hut car park costs 15 € (as of 06/2020), but it is also possible to drive directly from Holzgau to the Madautal valley. In Bach we drive through the Madautal, past the mountain village Madau to the parking lot Memminger Hut. The difference in height between Holzgau and the Memminger Hut car park is about 350 m. The steepest part of the stage begins at the Memminger Hut car park. There is the possibility to transport your luggage to the hut by cable car. The walking time from the parking lot to the Memminger Hut is about 2 hours and the difference in altitude is about 800 m above sea level. Due to the high traffic it is advisable to register with the Memminger Hut regarding the sleeping place. Alpine experience and surefootedness are absolutely necessary for an ascent!
