Holzgau – Café Uta - Roßgumpenalm
The Roßgumpenalm lies at 1329 m in the Höhenbach valley in the middle of the Allgäu Alps. The alp can be reached from Holzgau in the Lechtal. The MTB tour starts at the church, near the centre of Holzgau. The starting point can be easily reached by car or by hiking bus. There are also numerous free parking spaces at the starting point. From the church the tour goes northwards under the new suspension bridge. The new suspension bridge spans the gorge at a height of over 100 m. After a few minutes' drive, the asphalted road leads into a gravelled goods road at the power station building. After 1.5 km you reach the Simms waterfall, which can be heard from afar. The Simms waterfall was artificially constructed at the end of the 19th century by the English industrialist Frederic Simms. The goods road leads on a moderate gradient along the right side of the valley past the Simms waterfall. This section is considered the most difficult part of the MTB tour from Holzgau to the Roßgumpenalm. Less experienced mountain bikers should push the bike at this point, as it goes steeply over rocky terrain on the side facing the waterfall. A few metres after the Simms waterfall you reach Café Uta. The snack station reopens in summer 2012 and is open daily, except Wednesdays. The further course of the tour leads into the Höhenbach valley on a slight to moderate gradient. After about 45 minutes driving time you reach the Roßgumpenalm, which is open daily in summer. On the descent to Holzgau you should be very careful at the above mentioned place at the Simms waterfall and if necessary push down the mountain bike. (Danger of falling!)
